Abstract

A collaboration between Geosciences and Educational sciences was born under the Gefiss (Social Governance for Subsurface Engineering – « Gouvernance Elargie des Filières d’Ingénierie du Sous Sol ») project. The Gefiss project aims at initiating a multidisciplinary partnership to support the engineering fields of subsoil exploitation for the energy transition. Facing many controversies on geological issues from the general public, there is a strong need for education, information, and communication towards the general public on subsoil resources and how to extract them. Individuals build their understanding of the world through observation and experimentation; however, subsoil is rather a non-accessible environment. Relying on educational science theories, our objective is to make an inventory of the state of knowledge and public representations of the subsoil and its exploitation of the general public. Our aim is to understand the learning obstacles leading often to strong opposition against projects of subsoil exploitation and thus to propose innovative learning tools to overcome this disapproval. Our contribution has the ambition to draw perspectives for training and education on the subsoil and its exploitation for energy transition and sustainable development.
