Abstract

Many important applications in the food industry, biological systems, and recovery of fluids from the subsurface involve multiphase flow dynamics where one of the phases is a non-Newtonian fluid. The rheological properties of these fluids play significant roles in the engineering processes, which include shear-thinning, shear-thickening, viscoelasticity or the combination of them. However, due to the complexity of interfacial dynamics and the nonlinearity of the non-Newtonian behaviors, it still remains many challenges in presenting comprehensive understandings toward the mechanisms of multiphase non-Newtonian flow. This talk introduces the numerical tool box developed for the above purposes, and presents several practical applications of these models in the oil and gas industry. Moreover, viscoelastic oscillation — a new form of viscoelastic instability in the presence of another fluid will also be reported.
