Résumé
In recent years, research activity on the recovery technique known as low salinity waterflooding (LSWF) has sharply increased. The main motivation for field application of LSWF is the improvement of oil recovery by acceleration of production (‘oil faster’) compared to conventional high salinity brine injection. LSWF is a mild “reactive transport” process where in simultaneous phenomena occur at different time- and length-scales. There are slow (such as electro-diffusion in water film) and relatively faster (such as oil-brine interactions) sub-processes involving in its mechanisms which influence the ultimate efficiency of oil recovery by the method. To evaluate this process properly, particularly in the laboratory, and avoid false negatives, it is crucial to design the experiments to cover the time-scale span. Same goes for proper simulation of LSWF using computational flow dynamics (CFD) methods. In this talk, we address this by presenting experimental results at the micro-scale (from microfluidic experiments) demonstrating the time-effect and the kinetics of the process. Explanation for the observations is provided by discussing the underlying thin-film phenomena, and conceptual nano-scale simulations based on Poisson-Nernst-Planck theory.
